Highly instrumented* research sites are designed for long-term monitoring of ecological structures and processes. Among the 17 observational sites, some are characterized by intensive measurements of ecological processes (e.g. many fluxes on a single plot) while others give access to a large number of plots (up to 300) where less intensive protocols accumulate measurements on environmental parameter and biodiversity. This large number of monitored plots across climatic gradients, ecosystems types and land use intensity gives many opportunities to analyse impacts of environmental changes and how they change with time.
